Frequently asked questions

What is person-centred counselling?

Person-centred counselling is a non-directive approach that places you at the heart of the process. It’s based on the belief that you are the expert in your own life. My role is to offer a supportive, non-judgemental space where you feel safe to explore your thoughts and feelings. Through empathy, acceptance, and genuine connection, counselling can help you make sense of what you’re experiencing and move toward greater self-understanding and change.

What issues can counselling help with?

Counselling can help with a wide range of issues, including:
- Anxiety, panic and stress
- Depression, burnout and low mood
- Bereavement and loss
- Maternal Mental Health concerns
- Relationship difficulties
- Trauma
- Low self-esteem
- Life transitions and change
- Work or study-related challenges
- Feeling lost, disconnected or unsure of yourself
- Alcohol or drug-related concerns
- Neurodivergence, overwhelm or sensory sensitivity

If you’re unsure whether counselling is right for you, I’m happy to talk things through in our initial conversation.

How many sessions will I need?

There is no fixed number of sessions — counselling is a personal process, and the number of sessions varies depending on your needs and goals. Some people come for a few sessions to work through a specific issue; others choose longer-term support. We will review things regularly and go at your pace.

How long is each session, and how often do we meet?

Sessions last 50 minutes and usually take place weekly, though this can be flexible depending on your circumstances.

Where are you based?

I practice in two locations, one in the city centre of Aberdeen and one in Inverurie, Aberdeenshire. I also offer online counselling via a secure video platform for clients across the UK. Please note my counselling studio in Inverurie is on the first floor and does have stairs. My city location has a lift.

How much do sessions cost?

The fee for each 50 minute counselling session is £60. I offer a limited number of reduced-fee spaces depending on availability.

I offer a free 30 minute initial meeting for you to ask any questions you may have, tell me a little about yourself and for us to see if it feels like a good fit.

Is what I say confidential?

Yes. What you share in counselling is treated with strict confidentiality. There are some legal and ethical exceptions (such as concerns about serious harm or safeguarding), which I will explain clearly in our first session.

What happens in the first session?

The first session is an opportunity to get to know each other and explore what’s brought you to counselling. We’ll talk about what you’d like to work on, and you’ll have the chance to ask any questions. There’s no pressure to commit — it’s about seeing if we’re a good fit.
